Growing notes
Why our Ugwu seeds • Hand-selected within the pod — only plump, fully formed seeds are kept • Target germination of 100%: every seed you plant is viable • Vigorous climbing vine with broad, tender leaves — the market favourite for soups • First leaf harvest in about 4–6 weeks, then repeat cuttings for months • Thrives in Nigeria's rainy and irrigated dry seasons alike • Highly affordable per seed Planting your seeds Plant fresh — ugwu seeds do not store well, so sow within a week or two of arrival. Sow each seed 2–3 cm deep in moist, well-drained soil rich in organic matter, flat side down, spaced about 50 cm apart in rows 1 m apart. Keep evenly watered; seedlings emerge in 7–14 days. Train the vines onto a trellis or allow them to spread, and begin cutting young shoots and leaves once the vine reaches about 1 m. Regular harvesting encourages fresh growth.
