Heirloom seeds — save, replant, repeat

Heirloom varieties are open-pollinated, so seed saved from this season's best plants grows true next season. This collection brings together the West African and international heirlooms the nursery holds.

Imported lines are trialled on the estate before they reach the catalogue, and each product page notes the varieties' habit, days to maturity and the conditions they prefer in Nigeria.

— Frequently asked

What makes a seed heirloom?+

An heirloom is an open-pollinated variety that has been maintained for generations. Unlike F1 hybrids, saved seed grows true to type.

Will European heirlooms grow in Nigeria?+

Many do well under shade cloth, in the cooler dry-season months or at higher elevations. We note the best season for each variety on its page.

How should I store leftover seed?+

Keep sachets sealed, cool and dry — a tin in the coolest room, or a sealed jar in the fridge. Most vegetable seed keeps for two to three seasons this way.
